How to run a virtual research methods clinic

Illustrated pathway for this page
Turn a difficult design, measurement, analysis, reproducibility, implementation, or reporting problem into a focused review with an inspectable decision record.

A grounded place to begin

A virtual research methods clinic is a bounded consultation that brings one well-defined methodological problem to qualified reviewers. The submitting team provides the research question, protocol context, governing permissions, decision needed, evidence reviewed, current options, constraints, and deadline without exposing unauthorized sensitive material. Reviewers clarify assumptions, test fit, identify risks, compare options, and return a documented recommendation with limits and next actions.

Carry the idea into daily work.

  1. 01

    Prepare the clinic brief

State the exact decision, study context, design, population, measures, data status, assumptions, prior attempts, options, constraints, deadline, and materials reviewers are authorized to access.

  2. 02

    Match the review panel

Select expertise proportionate to the question and identify conflicts, confidentiality, scope, time commitment, decision authority, and when another specialty is required.

  3. 03

    Interrogate the reasoning

Examine estimand or analytic target, design fit, bias, measurement, missingness, sample size, uncertainty, assumptions, alternatives, feasibility, reproducibility, and interpretation.

  4. 04

    Return a shaped recommendation

Separate the preferred path, acceptable alternatives, rejected options, rationale, required checks, unresolved uncertainty, owner, deadline, and escalation trigger.

  5. 05

    Close the learning loop

Record the decision, implementation, deviations, outputs, later findings, corrections, and reusable methods insight without exposing restricted project information.

Questions that deepen the work

Does a methods clinic replace a statistician or methodologist on the project team?

No. A clinic can clarify a bounded decision, but sustained design, analysis, interpretation, and accountability may require an appropriately qualified project methodologist.

Should raw data be submitted to a methods clinic?

Only through an authorized secure pathway when access is necessary, permitted, minimized, and governed. Many early design questions can be reviewed from structured metadata and a clear brief.

Who owns the final methods decision?

The project should name the responsible investigator or authorized decision body. Reviewers provide documented expertise within scope; they do not silently assume project authority.
