Reproducible research workflows for distributed teams

Illustrated pathway for this page
Preserve provenance, versions, analytic decisions, code, outputs, quality checks, and review so a distributed research team can reconstruct its work.

A grounded place to begin

A reproducible distributed workflow allows another qualified person to identify the approved question, source data and permissions, dataset version, definitions, transformations, analysis plan, code version, software environment, deviations, quality checks, results, tables, figures, and interpretive decisions. Reproducibility depends upon the complete chain, not a final script alone.

Carry the idea into daily work.

  1. 01

    Freeze the governing inputs

Record protocol version, data source, access authority, inclusion logic, variable dictionary, analytic dataset version, and any approved amendments.

  2. 02

    Version consequential work

Preserve code, notebooks, prompts when material, software environments, parameters, outputs, tables, figures, and narrative interpretations with dates and owners.

  3. 03

    Log deviations

Explain changes from the protocol or analysis plan, the evidence that prompted them, who approved them, their timing, and how they affect interpretation.

  4. 04

    Run independent checks

Use code review, analytic replication, denominator reconciliation, spot checks, sensitivity analyses, and claim-to-output review proportionate to the consequence.

  5. 05

    Package the record

Create a governed archive containing the minimum materials required for internal reproduction, permitted sharing, publication review, correction, and long-term stewardship.

Questions that deepen the work

Does reproducibility require public data?

No. Restricted data can remain protected while authorized reviewers receive the documentation, code, controlled access, or reproducible evidence appropriate to the governing permissions.

What should be done when software changes?

Record versions and environments, test material changes, preserve prior outputs, document differences, and determine whether reanalysis or revised disclosure is required.

How should AI-assisted code be handled?

Treat material AI assistance as untrusted until qualified people inspect, test, document, correct, and approve the code within the project’s authorized environment.
