The research question

A living evidence brief keeps a clinical or educational summary aligned with new information. The process needs a precise question, a reproducible search, an update schedule, and a record of changes. Each claim should connect to its supporting study and the population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and follow-up that define its meaning.

How to interpret the evidence

A useful brief records when a study changes confidence, applicability, or a practical recommendation. Reviewers should verify corrections, retractions, registry updates, and relevant prescribing information. Earlier versions preserve the development of the evidence. An understandable public summary can then communicate what changed, why it matters, and which questions remain open.

PRISMA 2020 supplies a reporting framework for transparent evidence identification and synthesis. The living-brief workflow here is an original educational proposal.

An update should also inspect whether apparently new evidence is another analysis of an existing participant cohort. Several publications may enrich understanding without adding independent participants. Linking reports from the same study helps prevent double counting. The brief can then explain which paper supplies the principal result and which papers address complementary questions.

Practice the appraisal

Original update exercise: select one claim in an evidence brief and trace it to the supporting primary publication. Record the population, treatment, outcome, date, and uncertainty. Define which new information would alter its wording. A hypothetical new trial might expand applicability, while a safety communication might require a different counseling emphasis. Document the actual update only after verifying the source. This exercise creates an accountable link between a search result and a revised educational statement, making the living brief useful for both review and future maintenance.

Apply the lesson

An evidence brief should assign a reviewer and a clear update trigger. A new outcomes trial, a safety communication, or a clinically relevant label change may require immediate review. Routine searches can capture incremental findings. Keep a dated change log that connects each revised statement to its source and rationale, allowing educators and clinicians to understand how the summary developed.
