Lesson 1
Choose the library and project group
Begin by confirming whether your project uses EndNote desktop, EndNote online, or another approved reference manager. Interface labels and collaboration features differ by version. The recovered Brown Dry Lab instructions describe EndNote online groups, PubMed searching, Cite While You Write, Vancouver citations, and shared Word documents.
Create a project group with a clear study name. Agree on the library custodian and collaborators before changing a shared collection. Preserve the original library and use the approved backup or synchronization approach for your edition.
Put it into practice
- Record the product edition and Word platform.
- Create a project group and assign a custodian.
- Set sharing permissions to the intended collaborators.
- Add a short library note describing scope and naming conventions.
Lesson 2
Import and verify references
Search PubMed using a documented combination of concepts. For a known article, use its title, author, year, DOI, or PMID. Import bibliographic records through a supported export format. The original guide includes a PubMed Citation manager export to an NBIB file and import with the PubMed filter in EndNote online.
Inspect imported metadata against the primary article record. Correct missing authors, journal names, publication year, volume, pages, and DOI before inserting citations. Attach full text only when access and sharing rights permit.
Put it into practice
- Save the database, date, query, and selection criteria.
- Export the selected citation records.
- Import into the appropriate group and review duplicates.
- Verify each record against PubMed or the publisher.
- Label abstract-only reading and full-text review accurately.
Lesson 3
Write with Cite While You Write
Use the supported Cite While You Write integration for your installed edition and Word environment. Confirm that the plugin is available and connected to the intended library. Test it in a small practice document before editing a shared manuscript.
Insert citations through the reference manager and refresh the bibliography after changes. The recovered Lab instructions request Vancouver style and a REFERENCES heading with consistent font and size. Follow the current project and journal instructions when they specify a particular output style.
Put it into practice
- Create a practice paragraph with three source-supported claims.
- Insert one citation per relevant claim through the plugin.
- Add a second citation to a claim supported by two papers.
- Refresh the bibliography and verify the numbering.
- Check the selected journal style and document typography.
Lesson 4
Collaborate without losing citation integrity
Confirm the shared Word file and editing workflow with the project lead. The original instructions use Open in Desktop App for a SharePoint document. Current product documentation also describes supported online workflows; choose the path compatible with the team setup.
Before moving or converting a document, preserve a version with citation fields intact. A clean distribution copy and an editable working manuscript serve different purposes. Keep the working manuscript and reference library linked through the agreed workflow.
Put it into practice
- Agree who inserts references and who audits the bibliography.
- Use tracked changes and comments for substantive revision.
- Reopen the saved document and test citation refresh.
- Keep a versioned backup before major reference reorganization.
Lesson 5
Troubleshoot and audit
When a reference is missing in Word, verify the active library or online account and whether the record is in your accessible collection. The original guide suggests checking the general saved collection when a shared group record is unavailable. Inspect plugin compatibility with your exact edition before changing software settings.
For a website reference, choose the appropriate reference type and enter the author or organization, title, date where supplied, URL, and access date. Check the rendered citation for incomplete fields. Every cited claim should be supported by the source actually read.
Put it into practice
- Resolve duplicate records deliberately.
- Match every in-text citation to a bibliography entry.
- Verify every bibliography entry is cited or required by the journal.
- Check retractions and corrections in the primary source record.
- Review source support after any paragraph restructuring.
Your practice assignment
Build a verified five-paper project group. Draft a 150 to 200 word synthesis with citations inserted through EndNote. Provide the documented search, five verified records, a bibliography, and a short audit note describing one metadata correction and how you checked source support.
Review criteria
- Five records match their primary source metadata.
- Citations refresh correctly in the saved Word document.
- Bibliography and journal style are consistent.
- Each factual claim has appropriate source support.
Submission and feedback
Use the private workflow assigned by your mentor. Include your version, evidence, questions, and permitted AI disclosure. Completion of a learning exercise supports preparation; your mentor reviews readiness and determines project assignment.
